Ruth O'Dwyer - Speech Pathologist M Sp Path MSPA CPSP

Ruth O'Dwyer is a Northern NSW local having been raised and educated in the Tweed Valley area. She is pleased to return to her home community, family and friends after working for the last 2 1/2 years at TalkLink Trust, a charitable trust that provides assistive technology for communication for people of all ages and disabilities. Ruth worked with children and adults of all ages with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities, acquired communication disorders and various presentations of ill mental health. This included people with ASD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Global Developmental Delay, Motor Neuron Disease, Aphasia and Parkinson’s Disease. Ruth is very passionate about building functional communication skills through the day with AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and the role it plays to give everyone a say in life. Prior to New Zealand, Ruth worked for six months in Central Queensland for a private multidisciplinary clinic, meeting the needs of toddlers, preschoolers and school aged children with a range of communication difficulties. Her caseload also included support for children with autism spectrum disorders. Ruth is a trained presenter in Talking Mats. Talking Mats is an evidence-based tool for helping people with communication difficulties participate in conversations and communicate effectively about things that matter to them. Therapy Matters looks forward to having Ruth run regular Talking Mats training sessions at Therapy Matters through the year. Ruth works at our West Burleigh clinic Mondays (fortnightly), Tuesdays and Fridays. She provides an on-site service to Silkwood School on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
