Using Outcome Measures to Guide Clinical Decision-Making When Working with Children and Young People with Developmental Language Disorder

To plan and evaluate support practices for people with communication difficulties, speech pathologists must reflect critically on their choice and use of outcome measures. This poses a particular challenge when working with children and young people with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) due to the multidimensional nature of their strengths and challenges. This workshop will focus on exploring and reflecting upon outcome measurement when working with children and young people with DLD in the context of the four pillars of evidence-based practice, the WHO ICF/F-Words, and the Participation-focused Framework. The workshop will take a practical, case-based approach to highlight the essential practice of selecting outcome measures to collaboratively set goals, evaluate the impact of our supports, and respond to our ethical obligation to empower choice and control for children and young people with DLD and their families.

This full-day workshop for speech pathologists will cover:

  • Profiles of strengths and challenges in children and young people with DLD
  • Principles of practice: 4 pillars of EBP, the WHO ICF/F-Words, and the Participation-focused Framework
  • The purpose of and common challenges to selecting outcome measures
  • Goal setting and adjustment based on outcome measurement
  • Use of proximal (near, intermediate) and distal outcome measures
  • Availability of outcome measures
  • Frequency and timing of outcome measurement
  • Principles of dose and single-case experiment design in clinical practice
  • Considerations for neurodiverse affirming practice in the use of outcome measures
